WELCOME BACK

2025-2026

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to another exciting school year at The Maure Magnet! We are thrilled to begin the 2025–2026 school year together with our students and families. We know that when schools and families collaborate closely, students thrive.

The Importance of Attendance

This year, we are continuing our strong focus on reducing chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of the school year (about 8 or more days), whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Missing even just two days a month can make it harder for students to stay on track in learning. We ask for your partnership in ensuring your child attends school every day, on time, ready to learn.

School Hours and Punctuality

The school day begins promptly at 8:00AM. Any student arriving after 8:10AM will be marked late. Consistent on-time arrival builds good habits and helps students start their day smoothly.

Smaller Class Sizes – A Big Win for Our Students

We are proud to announce that this year we have successfully reduced class sizes in grades K–4:

  • In K–3, class sizes will not exceed 20 students.

  • In Grade 4, class sizes will not exceed 23 students.

This means more individualized attention, stronger teacher-student relationships, and greater opportunities for participation—all of which help your child grow academically and socially.

Celebrating Student Success – NYS Assessments 2024–25

We are proud of how our students performed on the 2024 New York State Assessments!

  • In Mathematics, our students made 7.3% growth, which is 5% higher than NYC’s average of 2.3%.

In ELA, our students made 5% growth, which is 2% higher than NYC’s average of 3%.

👏 A huge shout out to our students for their hard work and to our families for their support!

This year, students in grades 3–5 will participate in Computer-Based Testing (CBT). More information will be shared later this school year.

Family Engagement – Join Us!

We encourage parents to stay connected and involved:

  • Attend monthly PTA meetings on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:00PM in our multi-purpose room.

  • Support your child’s learning by encouraging regular reading, practicing math, and fostering curiosity at home.

Capital Spending Plan Update

We are excited to share that our school has been awarded a $500,000 capital plan for upgrading our multi-purpose room/auditorium. This will provide improved facilities for performances, assemblies, and community events.

In addition, the School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) will be designing and implementing the IPDVS (Internet Protocol Digital Video Surveillance System) for our school building, more information to follow.

Electronic Device & Cell Phone Policy

As required by New York State Law (§2803), personal internet-enabled devices (cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops, etc.) are not permitted to be used during the school day. At The Maure Magnet:

  • Students must power off devices upon arrival.

  • Devices will be secured in school-provided Velcro sealed pouches and returned at the end of the day.

  • In emergencies, parents can call the school office, and students can use classroom or main office phones.

  • Exceptions may be granted for medical or educational needs through the Assistant Principal’s office.

(Full details of our policy will be shared via flyers, notices, and social media.)

New Staff Members

We warmly welcome new school aides who will be supporting both classrooms and the cafeteria, ensuring every child receives the attention and care they need.

Programs & Activities

We are continuing to host a wide range of activities and enrichment opportunities, including:

  • 2nd Grade Swimming Program

  • Karate

  • Terrapin Scouts (Boys & Girls)

  • Monthly Parent Teatime

  • Science & Art Club

  • Parent Workshops

  • Middle School Applications and NYSCA account support

  • AIS Programs (Before & After School)

  • Weekend Cultural Events

Stay Connected

  • Please complete and return your child’s emergency card as soon as possible. Ensure that you clearly denote who can or cannot pick-up your child during emergency or unforeseen circumstances.

  • Sign up for ClassDojo with your child’s teacher for quick communication and updates.

  • Also, remember to complete a lunch form (family Income Inquiry form) at https://www.myschoolapps.com/ or request a paper form from your child’s teacher or the main office.

Together, let us make this school year one filled with learning, growth, and community!

Respectfully,

R. Honore, Principal
